Hello! It’s 민지[Minji] from 유행[Yuhaeng] bringing you news from Korea. Have you ever been caught off guard by someone looking you up and down while you’re just trying to take a walk? I experienced this when someone gave me the side-eye at a café. Well, guess what? As I was browsing through Instagram, I was taken aback because I found out that ‘someone’ was actually The Boyz's Sunwoo! (Of course, Sunwoo has a gentle demeanor, so it wasn't scary at all.🤫) But why was Sunwoo making that expression? I'll tell you everything you need to know, all the way from the beginning!

Why are your eyes making that expression while all dolled up in a gat(Korean traditional hat) and hanbok?
Look no further than this video. Isn’t it so captivating, even through the phone screen?🙄 The protagonist of the video, Edy Silvaa, is a Brazilian creator with 2 million followers. What about that majestic palace behind his striking face, you ask?
Edy traveled all the way to Seoul to engage in a staring contest while wearing hanbok for a collaboration video with Korean creator Ral Ral. It was a clash between the ‘side-eye champs’ from Brazil and Korea, a battle🥊 of the world's strongest!
So how exactly did the ‘side-eye champs’ become so popular?
You might be curious why ‘side-eye champs’ are popping up everywhere. As with many memes these days, social media played a role.

The image of a ‘man’ emphasizing and exaggerating the notion of "femininity’💅 has often been ignored or used as a subject of ridicule. However, social media has created new platforms for these exaggerated personalities to resonate with the public at the forefront of meme culture. Influencers like QYOUNG, who emphasizes genderlessness, and drag queen Nana Youngrong Kim have consistently received love on social media. Short-form editing has spread their witty and sassy expressions far and wide, and now they’ve become known as the ‘side-eye champs!’

Ral Ral “Square Eyes” MV
Why is Ral Ral considered the strongest💥 in the ‘side-eye battle’ scene? Have you seen those videos lately where TikTokers – those fierce unnies who doll themselves up and show off their charm or those who pet their dogs while saying, 'Open your eyes like a triangle?’ That's all thanks to Ral Ral's #SquareEyesChallenge. In fact, even idols have followed Ral Ral's lead, participating in the challenge during stage endings and V Live broadcasts. It's similar to the side-eye battles Edy used to do, but the #SquareEyesChallenge is also accompanied by Ral Ral's own song, ‘Square Eyes.’ You can even consider it a song born for such a challenge! The lyrics include the line, ‘Unnie, don't you hate me?’ which is an old Korean side-eye battle meme where a leaked transcript revealed two actors fighting while saying things like, ‘Unnie, don't you hate me?’ and ‘Why are you looking at me like that?’

Along with the release of the song, Ral Ral also revealed a collaboration with the original fierce unnies, Lee Hyori and Uhm Jung-hwa. Impressive planning ability, right? Ral Ral herself even claims to have brought Edy to Korea. It's a kind of shout-out to Edy’s legacy as his side-eye champ successor.
Recently, Ral Ral met with (G)I-DLE, who are currently promoting their new single 'Queencard,' and filmed the #SquareEyesChallenge and the #QueencardChallenge together. But doesn't it feel like someone is missing? (🙋♀️I am a Queencard!)
I mentioned earlier that the roots of our "fierce unnie" Ral Ral lie in influencers who highlight their queerness and genderlessness. That's why I love seeing people participate in the #FierceUnnieChallenge regardless of gender. It signifies that Korean society is becoming more open-minded towards diversity!
How about we try Ral Ral's #SquareEyesChallenge? You don't need to memorize any choreography or find a special background. Just look into the camera and open your eyes in a square, triangle, or circle shape. In fact, it's somewhat similar to Rosalía's 'side-eye' challenge! As someone who’s subscribed to 유행[Yuhaeng], you're no doubt already prepared to give it a shot. 😎
Ral Ral, (G)I-DLE, Sunwoo, Lee Hyori, Uhm Jung-hwa, and Minji + subscribers. Who do you think will be the winner? Let me know in the feedback box below😝

This is already really good and I love it. What I like is the fact that you cover up to date what is happening in Korea and what is trending instead of talking about old things. It helps us understand the current trends and stay on track with it! Love it a lot, makes me want to go to Korea and helps me understand the newer generation’s mindset! - Hélène
It's very cool like this, I like the way the newsletter is not so long nor so short, it's very easy to read it. Maybe add some games ? Or something to interact with? - Morgane
